MAP Scholars: General Track

The General Track is intended to provide MAP Scholars with an entry into doing biomedical research. Scholars are typically early in their undergraduate career, have an intention to major in biomedical sciences, have taken introductory biology courses, and have no or little experience with bench work.

Each MAP Scholar will be embedded in a lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Each internship runs for a semester with the possibility of extending for another semester or moving to the Research Track, if both the MAP Scholar and Faculty Mentor agree.

Key elements of the program:

  • MAP Scholars will work in the host lab for one semester;

  • MAP Scholars will be paid $17/hour;

  • MAP Scholars will commit to working 10 to 15 hours per week during the semester, including attending lab meetings.

  • MAP Scholars will learn the foundations of bench work, including how to prepare solutions, how to pipette, and how to perform fundamental experiments, such as PCR.

During the program, MAP Scholars also agree to:

  • Meet with their assigned MSU mentor for 2 hours every semester;

  • Attend at least 1 department seminar run by the Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Department and write 1 paragraph reflecting on the seminar;

  • Apply for additional applicable scholarships;

  • Attend MAP Program social events.

Applicants must be a current student at MSU-Denver. Applications will be primarily be judged on enthusiasm and interest. Prior lab experience is not needed! Applications for the Spring 2022 Cohort are now open and due by December 1, 2021.
